Why Digitalization is Key for Fighting the Climate Crisis

Digitalization is about growth and creating new revenue and value-producing opportunities – and is, therefore, often seen as speeding up the climate crisis.

Some people believe that successful climate action should deprioritize economic growth. They argue that societies must transition away from economic growth in order to avoid the climate catastrophe and address weaknesses of the market system, such as growing inequality.

Along with our partner World Economic Forum, we support a view that businesses should not focus on LESS growth, but MORE levers that make a positive impact on the environment.

We should focus on making renewable energy more efficient, industry more productive, policy-making more urgent, and business more transparent.

To achieve these goals, we need to advance in digitalization. Recent estimates from the World Economic Forum suggest that digitalization could deliver up to 20% of all contributions needed to achieve the 2050 net-zero goals in energy, materials, and mobility. We already see positive impact in areas such as energy generation, where digital solutions can increase the productivity of solar arrays by up to 45%. In the digital farming field, connected machinery can maintain farms’ optimum efficiency all the time.

Creating MORE – i.e. improving business efficiency as a positive impact on our planet – is at the core of KAIZEN™. “When applied to the workplace, KAIZEN™ means Continuous Improvement involving everyone – managers and workers alike”, says our founder Masaaki Imai. With this, we help companies make a Continuous Improvement strategic effort; a holistic way of developing the company and making each business a force for good.
